Time travel, destined loves, rockers in tough spots, and broken hearts. Plus visits to prehistoric times and a future planetary cataclysm. That's all on offer in *Every Anxious Wave* by Mo Daviau, an entertaining, if flimsy, read brimming with references and crazy premises, full of nonsensical coincidences and an unstoppable pace. A pleasant summer blockbuster, with certain dark moments, but one that gives off a certain charming air that makes it impossible to put the book down until you finish ...

I read "Every Anxious Wave" by Mo Daviau about seven years ago, and at the time, I didn't think it was anything amazing. I gave it three stars, which, for me, is a 'meh, nothing special' rating. Mostly, I just remember being annoyed that I had to pretend a cell phone could possibly work in the year 980 (Come on, Mo! No cell towers in the tenth century!). I know that's a silly thing to focus on since the whole book relies on you accepting the unbelievable—it *is* a sci-fi book about time travel a...

Mo Daviau's "Every Anxious Wave" offers a brilliantly different take on time travel, served up with a goofy, irreverent voice and a heap of wonderfully silly ideas. Imagine a bartender, a former indie rock star, who stumbles upon a wormhole in his closet. Naturally, his first thought is to use it to transport people to legendary rock concerts of the past. Picture it: Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Janis Joplin – all live! But things go sideways when his friend decides to journey back to 1980 to prev...

Ugh. Just didn't click for me.I'm not a fan of music-obsessed narratives to begin with. At least this one avoided the over-the-top, almost orgasmic descriptions of being in a band and the whole 'outsiders just don't get it' vibe.Time-travel stories that gloss over the science and treat it carelessly really bug me. Seriously, if you could travel through time, wouldn't you head straight to a 1990 Pustulent Zits concert? Forget witnessing the Crucifixion, ancient Babylon, or Shakespeare? And this g...

My first reaction after finishing this book, which felt shorter than it actually was:"I wish I could go back in time and convince myself not to read this book.""Bullshit!""Oh, for fuck's sake!!"You know the drill: a guy discovers a wormhole in his apartment. Being a has-been rock star, a decent bloke, and forever dreaming of better times in the past, he uses it to attend epic rock concerts of yesteryear. Sometimes he even sells tickets to these past gigs. When his friend Wayne accidentally gets ...

3.5 stars.Okay, so here's the kind of person I am. On my way home from a conference in Woodley Park, I hopped off the Red Line at Dupont Circle to grab some empanadas. Left to my own devices in Dupont Circle, I'm inevitably going to wander into Kramerbooks because, well, duh. (I feel like Politics & Prose is the more respectable answer when people ask about your favorite DC bookstore, but I gotta be honest – I'm a little more partial to Kramer's because I love their layout, their brunch is d...

4.5 starsEver notice how mixing romance and time travel often ends in disaster? And yet authors keep playing with the idea. Luckily, Mo Daviau, a first-time novelist, is one of them. She's crafted a quirky story that throws together a whole laundry list of elements practically guaranteeing a messy outcome: love, time travel, over-the-hill rock stars, wounded hearts, and even a cataclysmic asteroid event. What *couldn't* go wrong? And yet, she somehow pulls it off. Admittedly, the initial hook—a t...

This book genuinely surprised me. I went in expecting a hilarious, over-the-top read – I mean, the premise of a guy discovering a wormhole in his closet and using it to travel back in time to see his favorite bands sounds pretty wild. But "Every Anxious Wave" by Mo Daviau turned out to be a surprisingly heartfelt story. The plot moved quickly, and I admit I got a little lost with all the time-jumping at times, but I think it actually added an interesting dynamic to the storytelling. If you're lo...

This is a book with an irresistible hook: *High Fidelity* with time travel.
That's the perfect opportunity for a joyful, if flimsy, romp full of pop culture references and fanboy/girl gushing, and a little romance slapped on top because a book's gotta have one of those.*
And it started out that way.
It's got that same kind of bittersweet nostalgia as *High Fidelity*:
> Wayne and I shared that common affliction plaguing single men with limited prospects and self-destructive tendencies: we reg...

Even though "Every Anxious Wave" wasn't flawless, I absolutely loved it. Obviously, you need to embrace the whole time travel concept – which wasn't an issue for me at all. It struck the perfect balance between an entertaining plot, well-developed characters, and those deeply felt, nostalgic vibes (my weakness!). It reminded me a bit of "Ready Player One" in terms of its readability and sheer fun, with a dash of "High Fidelity" and "Back to the Future" thrown in for good measure. If you're looki...
