I'm honestly surprised by the high ratings for "Burnout: A Doctor's Fight for His Patients and Himself" because, in my opinion, the writing is just awful. Dean Mafako is clearly a medical professional, and the story centers around the CICU at the Children's Hospital in Biloxi. But Mafako is incredibly repetitive, and his drawn-out descriptions of medical procedures become exhausting and, frankly, quite boring. The characters are poorly developed too. He fails to create believable, three-dimensio...

Eric Phillson and his wife Anna were happy living in Fort Myers, Florida, but when he got the opportunity to help build a whole new pediatric heart clinic for Children’s Hospital of Biloxi, he hesitated at first. After visiting and bringing his family, he decided to take the leap. The hospital was below the national standard average for care, so this move would bring lots of personal strengths and challenges, affecting both his personal life and his standing as a heart surgeon. This novel reads like a memoir. It tells the story of Dr. Eric Philson, recruited from Ft. Myers to the CHOB—Children's Hospital of Biloxi—to work in their pediatric care unit. He quickly identifies major problems within the department: understaffing, outdated procedures, mountains of paperwork, and more. He sees this as a chance to make a real difference. But all his efforts can’t overcome the hospital's entrenched bureaucracy, and after years of trying to be a positive influence, Eric begins t...

"Burnout: A Doctor's Fight for His Patients and Himself" is an outstanding book about the healthcare industry. While reading "Burnout: A Doctor's Fight for His Patients and Himself", I learned a lot about the ins and outs of a hospital, and to be honest, this is the very first book I’ve read in this genre. It is fiction, but the author, Dean Mafako, clearly shared his experience in this matter. This book surely shows how lives can be affected by working in a hospital. The intense hours take a t...

I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning devouring this book. Dr. Dean Mafako shares his fictionalized account of his years as a cardiac intensivist in Biloxi, Mississippi, in the late 2010s. He's hired to build up the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, to hire staff, improve services, and more at their Children's Hospital. Reading this intense book, you'll learn about the medical industry, about the inner workings of hospitals, particularly the administrative and political side of hospitals. T...
