A re-read of this title, which has officially become my comfort zone within the Black Library. It features five connected stories following the Iron Snakes chapter, where we get a deep dive into how an Astartes squad actually functions, their relationship with the humanity they are sworn to protect, and the unique customs of their chapter.Even though they are successors of the Ultramarines, they’ve managed to carve out their own identity and iconography, all heavily inspired by Classical Greece a...

Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel by Dan Abnett follows Priad of Damocles Squad as he climbs the ranks of the Iron Snakes of Ithaka, a Space Marine chapter that feels distinct and honorable. Each chapter functions like a self-contained short story or novelette, chronicling Priad and his brothers-in-arms as they battle alien threats and the dark forces of Chaos across the vast Warhammer universe. Beyond the intense combat, there is some genuinely solid character development here; I ...

How often do I get to call a book perfect? Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel by Dan Abnett is so excellent that I’ll be recommending it to people who have no interest in the setting. It stands alone as a chronicle of an order of supernatural warrior-knights who defend their stars fiercely from all kinds of alien threats. This is a must-read for any fan of military science fiction.
The book is organized into a series of interconnected stories that build toward an intense finale, pa...

Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel by Dan Abnett pretty much nails my impression of the Space Marines: they are powerful, frightening, and clearly beyond human, yet they aren't completely invincible. If you are looking for a gripping sci-fi book review, this story hits the mark perfectly.

This is 100% a guilty pleasure re-read for me, but Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel is definitely a cut above other Black Library Astartes titles. Most books about Space Marines suffer from the fact that they’re either written by pretty terrible authors, or by good writers who just have a poor grasp of what Space Marines should actually be. Look, I get it—the classic advice is to 'write what you know.' Sci-fi writers often get a pass, but post-human, genetically engineered demigod...

Overall, this book was an incredible read. Dan Abnett delivers a masterful portrayal of the Iron Snakes in Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel, diving deep into their history and culture while successfully keeping them shrouded in mystery. The action sequences are consistently top-tier, and I found myself genuinely attached to several of the characters. My favorite part was definitely the beginning, where the narrative unfolds through Antoni’s perspective; it added a layer of awe and...

What better way to start the year than with a review of Dan Abnett's Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel? The first thing you should know is that, unlike many other Space Marine novels, Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel is a collection of connected stories following Damocles squad of the Iron Snakes Chapter. The format is a little unusual, and I had my doubts at first, but on the whole, I thought it turned out great. It essentially plays out like a series condensed into...

In my opinion, Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel is another golden winner from Dan Abnett. His immense ability to weave a narrative and create an entire culture and Space Marine chapter from scratch simply stuns me. The story flows beautifully and includes those neat little storytelling asides and historical flourishes that are staples of all Dan Abnett books. This sci-fi novel carries a heavy Greek influence, giving this world set 38,000 years in the future a surprisingly warm and...

I’ve always loved the way Dan Abnett crafts his stories. Having thoroughly enjoyed 'First and Only', 'Riders of the Dead', and 'Gilead's Blood'—which remains one of my favorite books ever—I dove into 'Brothers of the Snake: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel' as soon as my pre-order arrived.
This book is structured as a collection of interconnected short stories that follow the adventures of an Iron Snake Space Marine named Priad. For those who aren't familiar, the Iron Snakes are a chapter created by Ab...

My goodness, what a fantastic novel. I absolutely loved the Chapter, the characters, the action, and the clever conceit of storytelling through the various engagements of Priad during his first 12 years as an Iron Snake Marine. Dan Abnett is by far the best 40K author out there; he writes his Space Marines perfectly. The Iron Snakes Chapter was an awesome creation, and I only wish Games Workshop would release a dedicated Codex and models for them. I truly hope Abnett continues to explore this fa...
