Greig Beck has a true talent for bringing primordial worlds to life, and he does it again in Beneath the Dark Ice. This world is hidden in Antarctica, deep within a network of caves, and it's packed with nasty surprises. The official reason for the expedition is to find a tycoon whose plane crashed into the Antarctic ice. But the *real* reason seems to be a hunt for oil on the seventh continent. Unfortunately for the scientists and military personnel on the expedition, there’s a whole world bene...

Another Four Star Thriller!
Alex Hunter, the Arcadian, is a super-soldier enhanced with special genetic engineering to boost his strength and survival skills.
As the leader of HAWCS, he’s a true combative powerhouse and a fantastic hero.
Watching him summon the incredible strength to battle a behemoth, survive, and save the day is exactly why I'm hooked on this series! If you love action-packed thrillers, Greig Beck's *Beneath the Dark Ice* is a must-read.

It's pulp fiction at its finest, embracing the utterly ridiculous at times. But it's *good* pulp. A thoroughly entertaining thrill ride packed with action from the first page to the last. Throw in a terrifying Kraken preying on the heroes in a claustrophobic and frightening ancient cave, and Greig Beck's *Beneath the Dark Ice* had me hooked. If you're looking for a wild action-adventure book, look no further.

Oh boy. 2.5 stars, very generously rounded upPeople who know me and my reading habits know I've come to enjoy military thrillers and military sci-fi since giving the genre a shot. This is largely thanks to Matthew Reilly, an Australian author who likes his action a *liiiiittle* over the top but still manages to create cool treasure hunts or fun fighting sequences.I was told that Greig Beck is like Matthew Reilly, and that, combined with the premise of **Beneath the Dark Ice** (ancient ruins unde...

Technothriller gun-porn for people who like ancient monsters.
Does that sound like it's up your alley? Then good, because *Beneath the Dark Ice* is pretty decent at what it does. Plenty of action, some political commentary, but what it really has a lot of is super-competence and/or super-powers for its main character.
Alex is a freak of nature thanks to that bullet in his brain. Woo!
Now let's keep him in charge of his team of crack commandos and watch as the scientists they're protecting die...

3.5 StarsCraving an adventure? Then Greig Beck's *Beneath the Dark Ice*, the first novel featuring Alex Hunter, should definitely scratch that itch. It's packed with thrilling action sequences, each more complex than the last, set against extreme conditions, with danger lurking around every corner.Beck clearly draws inspiration from classic writers like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jules Verne, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with a dash of Lovecraft thrown in for good measure. He blends all of this, adds ...

In Antarctica, a small plane has crashed, its collision revealing a labyrinth of ancient caves. Following this event, a group of scientists, led by Tom Hendsen, a specialist in biology and fossil fuels, along with 28 Green Berets, are dispatched to the impact zone. But contact is lost with this group just hours later. In response, the U.S. government decides to send a more specialized team to determine exactly what happened to the missing personnel, as well as to continue investigating the possi...

Let me preface this review by saying that one of my favorite books of all time is an action/adventure novel set in Antarctica. So, I was trying so hard not to compare them. Trying hard (dramatic sighs)! When you read a new author, there's always that 'getting to know each other' period that can sometimes be rough. With "Beneath the Dark Ice" by Greig Beck, it was a bit rough. I wasn't sure about the way he told his story, and I couldn't quite connect with the characters. Some felt a little under...

1 Star!!! This book is ridiculous! The premise is just BS!I mean, sure, I can imagine how having a bullet lodged in your head might unlock neural pathways so instead of using 10% of your brain (if you believe that myth) you're using a whole lot more and maybe that would be very useful as a soldier. Might even amp up the aggression so high you have to go around sniffing green apples to calm down. Yeah - green apples work...apparently. And maybe you could possibly call up enough adrenaline at will...
