The Mimics are invading Earth. These aliens drain the life out of everything they touch, turning the planet into a lifeless, uninhabitable desert. Keiji is one of the many soldiers recruited to stop them. Fresh out of basic training, he's thrown onto the battlefield, knowing his chances of survival are slim. He dies. Then, the clock resets, and he gets another shot, like he's stuck in a video game. If you've seen the movie, you know the gist. It's an action-packed sci-fi war story with a *Grou...

In Hiroshi Sakurazaka's *All You Need Is Kill*, Earth's forces, comprised of Japanese, American, and other nationalities, are locked in a desperate battle against aliens. The story centers on a Japanese soldier trapped in a *Groundhog Day*-esque nightmare: kill, be killed, sleep, repeat. He's utterly lost, clueless as to why he's reliving the same brutal combat over and over, until he encounters an American soldier similarly ensnared in a time loop. Their combined knowledge might be the key to d...

I only recently learned that the 2014 action movie 'Edge of Tomorrow' was based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's 2004 Japanese sci-fi novel, **All You Need Is Kill**.The story follows young recruit Keiji Kiriya, who finds himself trapped in a time loop fighting the alien 'Mimics'. After each death, he wakes up on the eve of battle, trying to use what he learned in the previous loop to get further. It's been a while since I saw the Tom Cruise movie, but even though the basic idea is the same, **All You Nee...

For some reason, the Tom Cruise movie adaptation of *All You Need Is Kill* didn't quite hit the mark, but it actually piqued my interest in the source material. After finally picking up Hiroshi Sakurazaka's *All You Need Is Kill*, it's immediately clear that the film significantly whitewashed the story, and that decision undermines one of the book's simple yet profound themes, which I'll elaborate on in a moment. Keiji Kiriya is a Japanese soldier caught in a time loop, reliving the same few da...

Now that's what I call an in-depth review. But that's all you're getting. Because I ain't got time for this. And because that's how little I care about this story, *All You Need Is Kill* by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. And I won't even bother rating this. That's how little I care about this story. I said that already, didn't I? Oh well.

\n \"She could walk into any hell and come back unscathed.\"\nRita. Vrataski. They call her crazy. They call her a badass. They call her a lot of names. Angel of Death. Mad Wargarita. Full Metal Bitch. Few know the truth: that she's all of those things, and more. And less. Even fewer know *why*. Keiji Kiriya is about to join their ranks. This is the story of two ordinary people forced to do the extraordinary: save the human race from an alien invasion. We meet Keiji, a green Japanese recruit, on...

I knew about this novel because it's the basis for the movie *Edge of Tomorrow*, and I'm so glad I read the original Japanese novel, *All You Need Is Kill* by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, before seeing the film. As far as sci-fi book reviews go, this one is a must-read before watching the movie! The novel itself is a bit of an oddity in Japanese literature, being a prose novel. In Japan, manga is incredibly popular, with something for every taste, gender, and age. The topic and story of *All You Need Is K...

As a kid, when I’d first laid eyes on those guns, I thought they were the coolest things I’d ever seen. The black lacquer finish of their steel instilled an unreasonable sense of confidence in me. Now that I’d seen real battle, I knew with cool certainty that weapons like these could never repel a Mimic attack. I’ve had my eye on *All You Need Is Kill* by Hiroshi Sakurazaka for some time now. When I saw that the book is being adapted into a film, I thought that now is as good a time as any to r...

I absolutely love the movie Groundhog Day, especially the way the main character transforms from a hopeless guy into someone incredibly skilled by using the time loops. So, when I realized that **All You Need Is Kill** was based on a similar premise – time looping mixed with military sci-fi – I was immediately sold on the idea. When Apple, a friend on Goodreads, recommended **All You Need Is Kill** to me, I'd never even heard of the Japanese light novel format. (I later learned it's basically j...

I had a really hard time starting this review. There's so much to say and think about, yet *All You Need Is Kill* is unlike most novels that American and European readers are used to. The writing style, length, storytelling, character development, inner thoughts, and the overall approach to the genre – all these things create a strange, unfamiliar world that needs to be discovered with an adventurous spirit ready to experiment with the unknown. Science fiction is as vast as the universe it expl...
