The subject matter itself was quite interesting; the way in which it was told was a huge disappointment. I really disliked the main character, which completely ruined the entire book for me. The story was interesting to me because I am from Pittsburgh, and more specifically from Oakmont which is where the author lives. I think the story was reflective of the time period - the characters, their reactions, the ethnic diversity, and the influence of mill life on families and the community.
