Purely a reference book--not something you'd read for fun. As a reference, I'm not sure how good it is because I haven't tried to go to any of the places it describes. Bear in mind that "Eastern U.S." in this book doesn't include very much of the "Eastern U.S," -- it includes only parts of eight states along the eastern seaboard. I didn't read this one straight through, I don't think it's meant to be read that way anyhow. My family is using the book to decide on our next vacation - we look at the first page in each section to see which animals are frequently spotted at that particular location before reading on. It's a field guide, not a sit down and read straight through kind of book. The book is full of stunning photographs that offer the reader a quick glimpse at what animals may be encountered at each location. It's a great resource for planning wildlife adventures!

I loved it, but I'm biased - I'm the author. I learned so many new things about animals while doing research for this book. Probably the fact I found most interesting is the tidbit about whales never fully falling asleep since they are conscious breathers, imagine having to think about every breath you ever took! While the research was fascinating, there was nothing like visiting each location and sharing the wildlife experience with other like minded people who were on their own wildlife advent...
