Doing exposure therapy.https://emmareadstoomuch.substack.com...Well, you guys.I'm not shy about my unpopular opinions. When I dislike a book, I share that. In my opinion, that’s kind of the point of being a book reviewer in any definition: the honesty. But I’ve walked it back in recent years. I don’t read books I hate, at least on purpose, and I don’t shout that hate from the rooftops.Usually.But then I decided to read every Goodreads Choice Award winner for a substack post. And I had to confront...

This was truly fantastic. I had already seen and heard John Green discuss tuberculosis, but I absolutely loved how this book delves into history, the perception of disease, racism, and so much more, all without being overly long or inaccessible. I'm incredibly grateful for what the Green brothers have chosen to do with their platform. Everything Is Tuberculosis: A History of Our Deadliest Infection by John Green is a must-read, offering a deeply insightful perspective. If you're looking for comp...

Turns out everything is also capitalism, and that's why a preventable and curable disease still kills over a million people worldwide each year and remains the deadliest infectious disease. If you're also reminded of how the US intentionally bungled the response to another recent pandemic, good work, you picked up on the underlying theme. John Green, beloved author, podcaster, global health initiative advocate, and just genuinely empathetic Nice Guy of the literary world returns for his second n...

Almost the entirety of "Everything Is Tuberculosis: A History of Our Deadliest Infection" could've gone further, could've gone deeper. Hopefully, the mass attention John Green's book receives will spark interest in public health's inextricable links to a capitalist system, disability theory and rhetoric, and stories of inequality that exist within and beyond borders we've created out of the desperate need for power. This book review highlights the importance of understanding tuberculosis within ...

Yesterday, John was doing a livestream, signing copies of his book. While he was doing it, he was also talking to people in the chat. I asked him if he ever reads the reviews of his books here on Goodreads. He replied that he does, although he knows it's not the best thing for his mental health because the mean reviews stick with him much more than the good ones do. I'm not a famous author, but I can imagine that one of the most difficult parts of the job is resisting the temptation to look up ...

Everything Is Tuberculosis: A History of Our Deadliest Infection is a gem. It's incredibly accessible and interesting while delivering an incredibly educational, yet angering, account of tuberculosis. This is a disease that could very feasibly be prevented everywhere right now, yet, because of some hand-wavy reasons (*cough* greed *cough*), it still kills millions annually. While the book offers a more surface-level exploration into the exploitative, uncaring nature of our healthcare system, Joh...
