Always looking for more reasons to hate social media. Ugh.By now, it's become clear that many things once thought were cool—jeggings, that mousse-y foundation, social media itself, Mark Zuckerberg—are just the worst. So, in that sense, Sarah Wynn-Williams's *Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account* isn't exactly groundbreaking in pointing out the uncoolness of the latter two.At first, as the book follows the narrator's dizzying early days at Facebook, I was hooked. I've seen *The Soc...

4.5 starsWhat I loved most about *Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account* was its takedown of Sheryl Sandberg and her toxic workplace behavior. Sarah Wynn-Williams does a solid job overall, detailing how Facebook lost its way and became corrupt and careless regarding its impact on marginalized people worldwide. As someone who's experienced and witnessed workplace abuse, Wynn-Williams’s calling out of Sandberg (along with Joel Kaplan and Mark Zuckerberg) felt incredibly cathartic. Sh...

This was SO interesting and informative, exactly why I love non-fiction! It follows Sarah Wynn-Williams' career working for Facebook and all the INSANE experiences she's had, but also what she witnessed Mark Zuckerberg and other Facebook execs do and say... your jaw will drop, multiple times. I listened to the audiobook and loved her narration! (I typically don't rate memoirs, but *Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account* is getting a 5-star rating because Meta is trying to get this ...

WW's inability to grasp her own complicity in Meta's misdeeds is truly infuriating. I sympathize with her toxic workplace experience. No one deserves harassment at work. However, her position and responsibilities at the company directly contributed to immense violence and harm, a point she glosses over, claiming ignorance about Facebook's plans in China, with Trump, and in Myanmar. Either she's remarkably naive, or she's deliberately obscuring a significant portion of her responsibility. Other w...

Near the end of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” Nick says, “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money.”“Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account” is a brilliant title for the new exposé by former Facebook executive Sarah Wynn-Williams. The book, subtitled “A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism,” reads like a spicy office memoir if your officemates travel by private jet and your boss...

Remember when Facebook was just about sharing cat pictures (which I loved, by the way) and bragging about vacations (also loved)? It used to be a place for people living their best lives. Now, it's a toxic swamp where you feel more depressed than when you logged on!
*Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account* is a required read.
Technology is becoming the new cigarette smoking. We all started without giving it a second thought. Now, we really should be questioning if this is truly b...

I'm boosting this book because Zuck REALLY REALLY hates that it's out there and is doing all he can to squash it. Yeah, I know. I'm just a contrarian.-- And now, I'm here after reading an insider's accounting of What Facebook Is.And honestly, the title really says it all. Sarah Wynn-Williams hopped on board early on, idealistic as hell about WHAT Facebook could have been: a platform to reach out and connect people, to boost important messages, to change the world. She was a true believer. And it...

Oh, Meta doesn't want us reading "Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account" by Sarah Wynn-Williams? They're actively blocking its promotion? Makes you wonder what secrets they're so desperate to keep buried... This sounds like a must-read book review!

Here's what my publisher's weekly subscription said about Sarah Wynn-Williams's *Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account*: "NBC reports extensively in advance on revelations in *Careless People: A Facebook Whistleblower's Account*, publishing Tuesday. They note that, 'Meta filed an emergency request for a hearing before an arbitrator Saturday, arguing that Wynn-Williams had violated a nondisparagement agreement and seeking 'injunctive relief barring disparagement.'"NBC says Meta lawy...

I often wonder how future history classes will talk about our moment in time, given more distance and clear connections: the way algorithms have created the "Red Feed"/"Blue Feed" phenomenon that drives wedges between people, how our user data is weaponized by advertisers and politicians alike, if the future will view these social media sites as a net positive or net negative for humanity.Resources:The rest of this review is specifically about the book and my experience with it. But I wanted to ...
