This is a beautifully written exploration of the color blue and its profound connection to the history of Black people, tracing the echoes of blue – from the water that carried slave ships to America to the signs, symbols, and emotions woven throughout the African Diaspora. Imani Perry's "Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture" is a powerful read.
Indigo blue, a valuable commodity, was harvested before cotton took its place. It also stood as a stark reminder of the greed fuelin...

Imani Perry's mind is truly astounding. I had no idea just how many connections she would draw between the color blue and Black history and culture in *Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture*. This is a dense read, no doubt, but an incredibly thought-provoking one. If you're looking for insightful book reviews on race and culture, this is it.*Content notes:* sexual violence, child sexual abuse, incest, physical abuse, substance abuse and overdoses, medical abuse, industrial abus...

covercovercover. It's a real bonus that Imani Perry's *Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture* was so incredibly packed with emotion, knowledge, interesting facts, and gut-punching scenes. There are poetic moments and factual connections galore. Each chapter explores a different tie between blue and Black, and every single one is astonishingly interesting and clearly very well-researched. It's a captivating read, perfect for anyone looking for insightful book reviews.Although, I ...

I totally judged this book by its cover, and I'm not even a little bit sorry. It’s absolutely gorgeous! And guess what? I was right to be drawn in 😍"Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture" is a beautifully written, deeply moving, and utterly inspiring book. Imani Perry weaves together a tapestry of names and places, all centered around the color blue and its profound presence in Black people's lives across the globe. Some of the content resonated with my existing knowledge, but...

The narrator of this audiobook is the author, Imani Perry. Her voice is soft, genteel, and cultured. It's a real advantage to hear the author read her own words, especially in **Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture**, which is almost laid out like poetry but broken up by historical essays.
This book is somewhat of a history of Black Americans and the Diaspora, as seen through our connection to the color blue. My favorite colors are black and purple. However, I'm well aware th...

This is a collection of essays, some deeply personal to Imani Perry and others rooted in Black history. Each one was interesting and beautifully written. The underlying premise of the collection is that there's some connection between Black history and the color blue. I found that connection a little gimmicky, even though Perry insists it isn't. Imani Perry did an excellent job narrating her own audiobook of "Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture". I received a free copy of thi...

Imani Perry is a brave and loving writer, fearlessly experimenting on the page to define what it truly means to write a people's history. *Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture* is utterly unique; only she could have written this book. I absolutely loved it and was deeply moved by certain sections, passages, and even individual pages. Some parts were so dense with meaning that I know I'll need to revisit them repeatedly. Other connections felt a bit tenuous, a reach perhaps. Bu...

💙 An eloquent tapestry of historical facts and personal anecdotes. Insightful and meditative.\"Still I wondered, why so much blue? And what makes it matter? What makes it mournful and hopeful and Black?\"*Imani Perry's treatise on how Blackness is historically intertwined with the color blue covers a vast array of topics: enslaved men who became masters themselves, West African cloth dyers, the folklore of blue jays in the American south, use of bluestone for hoodoo, ceramics and pottery, jazz ...

I'm officially inducting the amazing Imani Perry into my "prose posse." What's the prose posse, you ask? It's that group of writers whose prose is often beyond description. When you just can't find the right adjective, well, it's just *prosey*! (Maybe I need to copyright that word.) She's the first nonfiction author to join the posse. Okay, I'm making a way-too-early prediction (the book, **Blue as Black: A Meditation on Race, Color, and Culture**, isn't out until January 28, 2025), but this one...
