“Most of life is confusing, but if you can laugh at it, you’re already doing better than most.”
I like Nate Bargatze. I like his clean humor. I like that he’s open and genuine. I appreciate that I can listen to him or watch his comedy without being bombarded by swearing or crude, graphic depictions of things that, quite frankly, most of us should be embarrassed to talk about in front of large groups of people. Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind fits that bill perfectly.

Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind
by Nate Bargatze
I'm a huge fan of Nate Bargatze, and as I read Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind, I could totally hear his voice in my head. It's like he's right there telling you the stories.
I really appreciate that he shares so much about his real life in Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind, too. Of course, Nate Bargatze often includes his family in his jokes during his stand-up, but it's cool to get some genuine background on one of...

2.5 starsI really enjoy Nate Bargatze’s standup, so imagine my disappointment when I barely chuckled while listening to all 6.5 hours of him narrating the audiobook of Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind. I always thought his whole “I’m not too smart” shtick was just that, a shtick, because comedians have to be inherently intelligent to come up with funny insights/jokes. Especially if you purposefully avoid being offensive or crude like Nate does - that takes effort and skill. But maybe h...

I was really let down by the audiobook, especially since it was read by Nate Bargatze himself. The stories in "Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind" felt boring and kind of half-baked, like he was holding back the best material for his stand-up routines. I'm still a fan of Nate Bargatze, but definitely not a fan of this book. If you're looking for funny books to listen to, I'd skip this one.

Stopped reading at 30%. Nate Bargatze's stand-up is hilarious, but *Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind* felt like listening to some dude at a backyard barbecue telling okay stories. Honestly, as a book review, it just didn't grab me.

This audiobook hits all the right notes! Nate Bargatze's stories are genuinely funny, surprisingly heartwarming, and totally relatable. The Christmas elf bit, the COVID barber story, and the Whataburger tale are definite standouts for me. Bargatze's narration is a real treat; he really brings these nostalgic stories to life and makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a hilarious and feel-good listen, grab "Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind." Thanks to NetGa...

Nate Bargatze has always been the kind of comedian who doesn’t need to yell or swear to get a laugh. He just tells you a story—usually something very normal that spirals into absurdity—and suddenly you’re dying over a conversation about whether sushi was invented in California or feudal Japan. (Spoiler: he’s not sure either.) That’s the magic here. It’s not big, dramatic punchlines. It’s him trying to explain to his wife that yes, he did go grocery shopping—he just went to one aisle, and it was ...

Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for providing *Big Dumb Eyes: Stories from a Simpler Mind* by Nate Bargatze for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own. As a fan offering my honest book review, here's what I thought:
I'm a fan of Nate’s style of comedy, mixing humble stories of his life with silly situations, and some Xennial flair. I was really curious to read what he’d consider worthy to be in a book. And make no mistake, this is 100% written in his voice. You can he...
